Detwika (/droitwick / [Translation Unavailable]) is a subtropical Large Town located in the Kshizbāj̼ Provence of the Kingdom of Hobben.

The name Detwika is derived from the Sylvin language, as Detwika was founded by Ůth́ie Aarons, who was culturaly Sylvin.

Climate

Detwika has a yearly average temperature of 16°C (60°F), with its average temperature during the summer being a cool 20°C (68°F) and its average temperature during the winter being a cool 13°C (55°F). Detwika receives an average of 248 cm/y (97 in/y) of precipitation, most of which comes in the form of rain during the summer. Detwika covers an area of nearly 7 km2 (2 mi2), and an average elevation of 1276 m (4186 ft) above sea level.

Overview

Detwika was founded durring the early 12th century in summer of the year 1114, by Ůth́ie Aarons. The establishment of the new community went well, though many minor issues had to be solved as time went on. This was enough to delay construction and push back the formal opening ceramony, leading to some embarisment for Ůth́ie Aarons.

Detwika was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the early 12th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Detwika is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature waddle and daub construction with good timber frames and a stone foundation protected by thatched or shingled rooves. Most buildings with second floors are built in such a way as to overhang into the streets on the upper floors for more space, as building size seems to be the primary indicator of wealth within the community. Most buildings are not decorated with any integral features, but instead use ivy, flowers, and other natural elements in planters of on trellices to breathe life into the structure they grow upon.

Detwika is is constructed arround a series of restrictive cobblestone mainstreets which form concentric circles, with smaller strait roads linking the circiles to each other at varrious points. The town is protected by a well-crafted cobblestone fence tall enough to provide adiquite cover for defenders to fire from, but no more than that. The town's frontieer-style defences are visibly old, but also obviously maintained semi-regularly. Its likly the local malishia or garrison are tasked with ocasional mantance of the towns defences.

Detwika has a very calm atmosphere. People can be seen relaxing, scocilizing, and going about all manner of business other than the daily grind. Men, women, children, all can be seen enjoying life in a laid-back way in the many parks which line Detwika’s streets. The town is very clearly a joyfull place as well as relaxing. Music can be heard often, as well as laughter. The smell of food and drink permiates the air. You can’t help but smile.

Civic Infrastructure

Detwika has an animal control department which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the control, impoundment, and disposition of animals.

Detwika has an Office of Civil Groundskeeping, which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the construction and upkeep up of all plant life, water features, and other natural decorations within Detwika. They are also responsible for the maintenance of these features. Notably, the OCG is not responsible for Detwika's parks.

Detwika has an Office of Civil Vicary, which is responsible for providing a livelyhood for all officialy recognised religious figures within Detwika.

Detwika possesses a Galvanic Power Grid, which brings galvanic current to most if not all buildings in town, and permits a great many consumer goods to function within the Large Town. Detwika's grid is powered by a direct leyline tap.

Detwika's old civil lighting system was converted to Galvanic Lamps recently, and expanded to provide nighttime illumination to all city streets.

Detwika has a Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the construction, management, and usage rights for all of its parks and parklands. They are not to be confused with the Office of Civil Groundskeeping as they do not hold authority over nor responsibility for Detwika's natural decorations nor waterways.

Detwika has a Guild of Roadworkers, who are responsible for maintaining the roadways and public paths within town. They also have the duty of enforcing all civil laws relating to the roadways.

Detwika has a public schooling program overseen by the Hall of Sages who has the responsibility of ensuring access to affordable high-quality education in all basic classes (Reading, Writing, Mathmatics, General Sciences, General Arcana, and Social Education) is made available to all citizens.

Detwika has a public septic system, which allows its citizens to have indoor bathrooms. The septic system is overseen by the League of Sewerkeepers, who posses the legal authority to enforce all laws relating to the septic system, and are also tasked with its maintenance and upkeep.

Cultural Notes

There’s a relatively new religion in Detwika which is rapidly gaining power. It might be a sectarian offshoot of a major faith, the unique product of a new prophet, or an outside faith backed by wealthy and powerful foreign supporters. Depending on the demands made on believers, the new faith may be a matter of concern only to the existing clergy, or it might be a major flashpoint for conflict in the community.

Detwika's mayor's house was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is characterized by vertical proportions, pointed arches, external buttressing, and asymmetry in the general shape of its buildings. The decorative features of the style were key, consisting of large arched windows, pointed arches, vaulted ceilings, flying buttresses, and sculptures integrated into the structure itself. Occasionally, for very important buildings, an array of sculptures or one colossal sculpture might replace the entirety of the entrance to said building.

The Dryad near Detwika are known to be a mutant strain of the creature.

Detwika's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in winter and involves destroying a prepared ritual vessel to channel Truename Magic energies of tier 1 via mimery.

History

In time immemorial, reportedly some time during the late 2nd century, Detwika was attacked by savage selkiess living nearby. The details of the conflict are hazy at best due to many conflicting accounts. What is known is Detwika lost 253 people, 199 livestock, and 62 buildings. The conflict ended after roughly 89, when members of Detwika's militia enacted an operation to bring aid to another fighting force. The operation was complicated by the militia had access to far less resources than expected. The conflict ended with pitched battle between both forces, which ended in a stalemate for Detwika's forces. The war is remembered in legend by Detwika's bards, historians, and legend keepers.
